Hyundai Motor Company is collaborating with Samsung Electronics to build a smart factory.

Hyundai Motor Company completed the verification of the '5G specialized network Redcap' technology developed in cooperation with Samsung Electronics, and noted that it will be exhibited at the 'MWC25 Barcelona,' the world's largest information technology (IT) and electronics fair, next month.

A 5G specialized network has dedicated communication systems without interference from outside internet and mobile users, achieved by installing separate base stations for communication within a company or specific area and utilizing separate communication frequency bands.

Since there is no external interference, communication disconnections or delays are minimal, allowing for rapid transmission and reception of large amounts of data, enabling centralized control over numerous industrial robots and wireless devices essential for smart manufacturing innovation.

The two companies completed the verification of communication performance using the vehicle inspection terminal designed by Hyundai Motor Company based on the 5G specialized network Redcap infrastructure, composed of Samsung Electronics' dedicated base stations and integrated management systems, at a testbed in Samsung Electronics' Suwon facility starting from January this year.

The 5G specialized network Redcap technology is characterized by its design for low power, low specifications, and low costs through the simplification of terminal configuration, miniaturization of specialized network equipment, and reduction of frequency bandwidth considering the manufacturing site facilities compared to existing 5G.

In the case of Hyundai Motor Company, it has been proactively verifying 5G specialized network technology since the end of 2022 by establishing a testbed at the Uiwang Research Institute. Currently, the 5G specialized network is undergoing trial application at the assembly line of Ulsan Plant No. 3 and the new plant established in Georgia, United States, named Hyundai Motor Group Meta Plant America (HMGMA).

Hyundai Motor Company is also pushing for the introduction of a 5G specialized network at the Ulsan electric vehicle (EV) dedicated plant, scheduled to be operational in the first half of 2026. Through this demonstration, they aim to secure the mass producibility of the 5G specialized network Redcap technology to expand its application to major domestic and international production facilities, starting with the Ulsan EV dedicated plant.
