Hanwha Aerospace announced on the 18th that Kim Dong-kwan, chairman of Hanwha Group, participated in the largest defense exhibition in the Middle East, the IDEX 2025 (International Defence Exhibition & Conference), where he met with Faisal Al Bannai, the chief executive officer (CEO) of the Emirati defense company EDGE Group. The two companies discussed building strategic partnerships in the defense industry, as well as in the aerospace and shipbuilding sectors.
EDGE Group operates defense, aerospace, cybersecurity, and maritime defense-related businesses in various fields. It is also actively involved in maritime defense and is carrying out shipbuilding and vessel construction projects through its subsidiary Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB). ADSB produces naval ships, patrol vessels, and supplies these vessels not only to the UAE Navy but also to overseas clients.
Vice Chairman Kim discussed various defense export solutions with EDGE officials. In particular, discussions were held regarding strengthening local production and operational capabilities of weapons systems, as well as collaboration on developing various unmanned systems based on accumulated expertise in aircraft engine manufacturing and mechanical and electronic equipment. EDGE has emerged as a leader in the unmanned weapons systems field after acquiring Milrem in Estonia in 2023. There are expectations that the possibilities for cooperation with Hanwha will continue to expand.
Hanwha proposed to cooperate with EDGE to establish unmanned air defense systems to enhance the protection capabilities of key national facilities. Through this, they aim to establish an effective defense system and review opportunities for joint business expansion in the Middle East and global markets.
Hanwha also proposed collaboration with EDGE in the aerospace and satellite industries. Additionally, it emphasized the significant potential for collaboration between Hanwha Ocean and EDGE shipyards in the shipbuilding and marine sectors.
An EDGE official noted, "This meeting is an important opportunity for EDGE and Hanwha to discuss cooperation visions for strengthening defense capabilities," and added, "Both sides share the same goal of enhancing national defense capabilities and will further solidify cooperation plans."
