SK Gas and SK eternix's project to promote energy storage systems (ESS) in the United States has entered full swing.
On the 17th, SK Gas and SK eternix announced that the first project of their joint venture 'SA Grid Solutions' with the U.S. renewable energy company Apex Clean Energy (Apex) has commenced commercial operation.
The project facility is located in southern Texas, which has the largest ESS market in the world. It has a total capacity of 100 megawatts (MW) and comprises 34 inverters and 340 batteries.
Texas is a region in the United States experiencing a rapid increase in electricity consumption and has a high proportion of renewable energy, making it a promising area for the growth of ESS projects. The electricity trading market is the most developed in the country, allowing for high profitability depending on the operator's capabilities due to the high degree of trading freedom.
Previously, SK Gas and SK eternix established a local subsidiary 'Gridplex' in the United States in December 2023 to expand their overseas renewable energy business and set up a joint venture with Apex in January of last year.
The two companies plan to expand their ESS business not only in Texas but also to other regions in the United States. They aim to increase their business scale to approximately 900 MW by 2029 and to leverage their accumulated ESS operation and electricity transaction capabilities to ultimately dominate the domestic market.
