Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) announced that it signed a supply contract for enriched uranium with Centrus Energy Corp. on the 4th (local time) in Washington, D.C., USA. The contract period is 10 years. KHNP noted that through this contract, it has enhanced fuel supply stability and secured an opportunity to obtain fuel not only for existing commercial nuclear power plants but also for future nuclear power plants.
Centrus is the only corporation authorized by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to produce high-purity low-enriched uranium (HALEU) used as fuel for next-generation nuclear power plants and small modular reactors (SMRs). Centrus succeeded in the initial production of 20 kgU (kilograms of uranium) of high-purity low-enriched uranium at its facility in Ohio, USA, in 2023 and began mass production of 900 kgU annually.
KHNP President Hwang Joo-ho said, "This contract will play a significant role in strengthening South Korea's energy security while ensuring a stable supply chain of enriched uranium."
