SK Telecom and SK Hynix announced that on Nov. 9, in Las Vegas, U.S., they signed an agreement with the U.S. AI data center solutions corporation Penguin Solutions for "joint research and development (R&D) and business promotion of AI data center solutions."
The signing ceremony was attended by Yoo Young-sang, CEO of SK Telecom; Mark Adams, CEO of Penguin Solutions; and Kim Joo-sun, president of SK Hynix's AI infrastructure division, representing their respective corporations.
Penguin Solutions is a leading company in integrated AI data center solutions and has expertise in building large-scale AI clusters. SK Telecom had previously signed an investment contract worth $200 million with Penguin Solutions in July.
SK Telecom, SK Hynix, and Penguin Solutions agreed to cooperate in three major areas: global expansion of AI data centers, joint R&D of solutions and commercialization, and the development of specialized next-generation memory appliances.
The three corporations will seek business opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region, including Japan, as part of their global expansion efforts. They will also complete a full stack of software necessary for building and operating AI data centers for joint R&D and commercialization, and will promote server demonstrations and commercialization using the Rebellion NPU chip. SK Hynix and Penguin Solutions plan to jointly develop next-generation data center memory technology to enhance their competitiveness in the high bandwidth memory (HBM) sector.
SK Telecom expressed expectation that this agreement would further strengthen their "AI infrastructure super highway" strategy. The AI infrastructure super highway refers to a strategy for building AI infrastructure nationwide centered around three pillars: AI data centers, GPU as a Service (GPUaaS), and Edge AI.
Yoo Young-sang, CEO of SK Telecom, noted, "Through this 'Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025', we have demonstrated the competitiveness of AI services and infrastructure, as well as semiconductors owned by SK, to the world," adding, "This year, we will achieve significant results in AI, which is the core of our growth momentum, through various collaborations with global partners."
