Jeju Air has decided to fully support the funeral expenses of the victims of the passenger plane accident that occurred at Muan International Airport in Jeollanam-do.
On the 30th, Jeju Air prepared an agreement with the bereaved family council regarding this matter. Lee Jong-seok, the head of Jeju Air's management planning department, said during a briefing after the agreement was drawn up, “Although we cannot alleviate all your sorrows with a single piece of paper, I deeply empathize with your grief as a father myself.”
He said, “Once again, I want to extend my deepest apologies to the victims who lost their lives and their families,” adding, “In addition to the agreement, if there is any way you can be comforted or reassured, I will do my best to take responsibility and accept any measures.”
Previously, Park Hwan-sin, the representative of the bereaved family council, reported, “Jeju Air stated that it would cover all related direct and indirect expenses for the funeral, accommodation, and transportation. Jeju Air also said it would take full civil and criminal responsibility related to the aircraft landing incident.”
The Jeju Air Muan incident occurred around 9:03 a.m. the previous day when flight 7C2216 crashed into a concrete embankment after landing (a method in which the aircraft touches the ground) at Muan International Airport in Jeollanam-do. In the accident, the aircraft was completely consumed by fire, with all but two of the 181 passengers aboard losing their lives. The fuselage of the aircraft burned to such an extent that, except for the tail section, no shape remained after the impact.
Aekyung Group, which owns Jeju Air, issued an apology on behalf of Chairman Jang Young-sin and its employees, stating, “We will do everything we can to provide support at the group level, not just Jeju Air, to promptly manage the accident and ensure necessary measures are carried out.” However, they faced criticism for a lack of sincerity as they visited the site about 11 hours after the accident occurred.
Chae Hyung-seok, vice chairman of Aekyung, visited Muan Airport the previous day and stated, “I deeply empathize with the sorrow and pain that many are experiencing due to this accident that caused the loss of precious lives, and I accept the responsibility heavily. We will actively cooperate with the investigation and support of the relevant authorities.” He added, “We will also listen to the voices of the victims' families and provide all necessary support.”
