Mirae Asset Financial Group, which invested about 177 billion won in SpaceX and hit the "jackpot," has also poured large sums into domestic artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductor corporations. The AI corporations investment confirmed in its semiannual report totaled 177 billion won, close to half of the SpaceX investment. There is a perception that Mirae Asset Financial Group focuses only on overseas investments, but some say that is merely a misunderstanding.
According to the investment banking (IB) industry on the 27th, Mirae Asset Financial Group invested about 120 billion won in a pre-IPO round conducted by Rebellions in April. Mirae Asset Venture Investment invested about 100 billion won, and Mirae Asset Securities invested 20 billion won. The cumulative investment amounts to about 150 billion won.
Mirae Asset Securities directly invested a total of 30 billion won in FuriosaAI. It bought about 20 billion won worth of existing shares from an earlier investor in February, then added 10 billion won in the pre-IPO conducted in May. Mirae Asset Securities is also the lead underwriter for FuriosaAI's initial public offering (IPO).
Mirae Asset is well known as a financial group that aggressively invests in overseas innovative corporations. Since 2022, Mirae Asset has invested about 400 billion won in SpaceX through investment partnerships managed by Mirae Asset Capital. Of this, the Mirae Asset Securities investment is about 200 billion won. The average acquisition price is around $34 per share, and as SpaceX's corporate value surged, it recorded a large valuation gain in the second quarter this year. Mirae Asset Securities' second-quarter net profit was 1.9052 trillion won on a consolidation basis, surpassing all five major commercial banks.
The large-scale investment in SpaceX also drew some uncomfortable looks. Some in political circles noted, "There are many AI and semiconductor corporations in Korea that need growth capital. Why is a leading domestic financial group investing only in overseas corporations?"
However, IB industry officials said this is just a misunderstanding. They said that because Mirae Asset Financial Group is highly proactive in investing and overseas corporations' results are relatively more visible, the perception arose that the group invests only overseas.
On top of that, there is a view that Mirae Asset's investment scale will grow alongside the execution of the Public Growth Fund. First, a consolidation link between Mirae Asset and the Public Growth Fund is being discussed. Mirae Asset Financial Group Chairman Park Hyun-Joo serves as a co-chair of the Public Growth Fund Strategy Committee along with Financial Services Commission (FSC) Chairman Lee Eog-weon and Celltrion Group Chairman Seo Jung-Jin.
An IB industry official said, "As the Public Growth Fund expands investments in advanced industries such as AI and semiconductors, cases where private financial companies' capital joins in will increase," and added, "Mirae Asset is actively seeking investment opportunities not only overseas but also in domestic innovative corporations."
