Park Hyun-joo, chairman and global strategist (GSO) of Mirae Asset Group, stressed that Samsung Electronics and SK hynix should focus on investment to generate excess profits rather than expanding shareholder returns.
Park made the remarks at a dinner with all executives and employees of DigitalX held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the 26th. The event was prepared to share the future blueprint of "Mirae Asset 3.0," centered on digital assets, after Mirae Asset Group secured management rights of DigitalX on the 7th of last month.
Regarding some claims that the share prices of Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are falling because of insufficient shareholder returns, Park said, "If they had paid a lot of dividends, would Samsung Electronics and SK hynix have emerged?" and emphasized, "A company improves when it does not pay dividends. It must be boldly grown through capital accumulation."
He also said excessive concern was unnecessary regarding the United States' tariff policy toward Korea. Park said, "It will be difficult for the United States to slap heavy tariffs on Korea," adding, "Without semiconductors, neither Nvidia nor U.S. big tech can operate. The idea that the United States would impose a 50% tariff on Korea is out of the question."
On real estate, he said, "I think the real estate tax regime is no joke," and assessed, "I believe the current problem with dwellings has a chance of being resolved." He added, "The era of making money from real estate should end for everyone," saying only then will the younger generation be able to feel the benefits of welfare.
He was skeptical about the growth potential of a won-denominated stablecoin. Park said, "You might hold a dollar stablecoin because of demand for dollars, but it's questionable whether a won stablecoin will do well."
