Recently in the card industry, adoption of Copilot, Microsoft (MS)'s Generative AI service, has been spreading. There is an assessment that its functions—searching in-house documents, regulations, and reports while maintaining security, and supporting meeting minutes and material summaries—are suited to the financial sector work environment.
On the 25th, according to the card industry, Copilot adoption began to pick up speed as the financial authorities eased regulations. The Financial Services Commission in Jan. of this year designated the use of Generative AI as an innovative financial service, allowing 26 financial companies to pilot it. In Apr., it eased network separation regulations so that software as a service (SaaS) that meets certain security requirements can be used on internal business networks without a separate innovative financial service designation.
Woori Card moved first. In Jun. last year, Woori Card established an AI Promotion Team under the Digital Division to set AI strategy and discover innovative services. In Jan. this year, it formed the AX (AI transformation) Promotion Committee to drive AI transformation centered on frontline departments, and in May, it introduced MS Copilot companywide so employees could use Generative AI on company PCs.
KB Kookmin Card also adopted Copilot and ChatGPT Enterprise and is understood to be using them for internal document searches, summaries of customer counseling content, and marketing support. In the second half of the year, it plans to further improve operational efficiency by using AI. Samsung Card(029780) is also reportedly reviewing the introduction of a workplace Generative AI service.
Among various Generative AI services, card companies are said to prefer Copilot because it is easy to link with existing work environments and convenient to manage security. Copilot applies, as is, the user-specific document access permissions, security grades, and data loss prevention policies set in M365. If a user does not have permission to view certain materials, Copilot cannot search them or use them in answers. M365 is MS's cloud-based subscription service that provides office programs such as Word and Excel.
Another strength cited is that Copilot generates answers based on internal materials. While general Generative AI may require separate uploads of in-house data or experience hallucinations that produce content differing from facts, Copilot can find needed information by connecting to OneDrive and Outlook already used by companies, which is said to make it highly practical for work.
A card industry official said, "The use of Generative AI is expanding beyond simple document writing to everyday tasks such as in-house knowledge searches, meeting organization, and report drafting," adding, "Adoption will continue to grow around AI services that can ensure both security and productivity."
