Lee Eog-weon, chairperson of the Financial Services Commission, said on the 10th that the government will swiftly finalize a plan to fully lift network separation for financial companies with sufficient artificial intelligence (AI) and security capabilities.
The chairperson attended the "Information Security Day commemorative event" hosted by the Financial Security Institute on the morning of the same day and said, "We will carry out AI security tests without a hitch under the emergency easing of network separation that has been in effect since June."
The chairperson said, "Close cooperation between the government and the private sector is crucial to respond effectively to new digital threats," adding, "The government will continuously communicate with the field to build an AI security framework and, through steady institutional improvements suited to a changing era, create a safe and trusted digital finance environment."
The event was organized to bring together leaders in the financial sector to seek joint response measures against increasingly sophisticated AI-based cyberattacks. Information Security Day is a statutory commemorative day established at the pan-government level to prevent cyberattacks and make information protection part of daily life, prompted by large-scale disruptions at government agencies and financial companies caused by cyberattacks on July 7, 2009.
At the event, the Financial Services Commission presented the Financial Security Meritorious Chairperson's Commendation to exemplary cases that contributed to improving the reliability and stability of the financial industry by sector across financial companies.
In the group category, awards went to two institutions, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance and Korea Securities Finance, and in the individual category, to Yoon Ho-young, CEO of KakaoBank, Jang Eun-young, executive director at Citibank Korea, and Kim Dae-hee, division head at DB Insurance.
A special lecture by Ko Hak-soo, a Seoul National University professor, on "financial security governance," and another by Lee Sang-geun, a Korea University professor, on "AI innovation and security" followed.
