The three major stock indexes in New York opened higher on the 9th (local time), led by strength in semiconductor stocks.
As of 9:51 a.m., the Dow Jones Industrial Average on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) was up 24.50 points (0.05%) from the previous session at 52,372.89. The Standard & Poor's (S&P) 500 rose 23.35 points (0.31%) to 7,506.06, and the Nasdaq composite gained 124.14 points (0.48%) to 25,994.79.
Semiconductor stocks led gains in New York that day. Micron, a memory chip maker, rose 7.78%, while SanDisk and Lam Research climbed 6.02% and 10.49%, respectively.
Western Digital and Seagate Technology jumped 8.01% and 7.69%, respectively.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index also rose 5.13% that day.
However, escalating tensions between the United States and Iran capped the market's upside.
The previous day, U.S. Central Command said it struck about 90 Iranian targets.
Iran's state media IRNA reported that the United States attacked areas around the nuclear power plant in Bushehr Province in southern Iran. Iran's semi-official Fars news agency also said the United States struck the Agh Takekan railroad bridge in Golestan Province in northern Iran.
Iran responded by attacking U.S. military bases in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar.
According to Jordan's state news agency, tensions are rising beyond the Gulf as well, with missiles launched from Iran entering Jordanian airspace that day.
By sector, technology and real estate were strong, while communications and energy were weak.
European stocks mostly rose as well. The Euro Stoxx 50 was up 1.14% from the previous session at 6,275.84 in trading. Germany's DAX and France's CAC 40 rose 0.53% and 0.68%, respectively. Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.40%.
International oil prices fell. At the same time, the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for August 2026 delivery, the nearest-month contract, was down 0.79% from the previous session at $72.94 per barrel.
