Microsoft (MS)'s internet browser "Internet Explorer (IE)" will be completely phased out from the financial sector next month. MS ended support for the IE 11 browser in June 2022, but financial authentication had continued to be supported because some users remained in Korea.
According to the industry on the 29th, the financial sector will stop financial services through IE 11 in mid-next month. As the Korea Financial Telecommunications and Clearings Institute ended support for IE 11 financial certificates, users will no longer be able to access financial services.
The Korea Financial Telecommunications and Clearings Institute's financial certificate is a service that issues and stores certificates in a cloud repository and allows the use of internet banking without installing separate programs. With the end of support for the financial certificate, financial services through IE 11 will also end. The financial sector is strengthening customer notices related to the end of IE 11 service.
MS ended support for IE 11, including security updates, in June 2022. Although the halt in updates left many security vulnerabilities, support for the financial certificate was maintained because some IE users remained. With users recently plunging and security issues surfacing, a complete shutdown of the service was decided. The share of IE users in Korea is known to be below 0.1%.
