Financial Supervisory Service employees are expected to be able to use Generative AI, including ChatGPT, on external networks starting next month. FSS employees had been restricted from using Generative AI on external networks for security reasons, but the National Intelligence Service is said to have recently approved its use.
According to the financial authorities on the 24th, the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) has been discussing with the Financial Services Commission and others since last month ways to use Generative AI such as ChatGPT and Claude on external networks. The related discussions are reportedly in the final stage. Around the same time, the FSS is said to have completed a security review by the National Intelligence Service (NIS) for the use of Generative AI. As a result, the FSS is expected to be able to use Generative AI as early as next month. It is currently said to be deciding the specific implementation timing and the types of Generative AI that can be used, and to be upgrading internal systems to strengthen security.
The networks the FSS uses for work are divided into an internal network and an external network. The internal network cannot access the external internet and is used for tasks using internal data. Internet access is possible through the external network, but the use of Generative AI is restricted due to the possibility of internal information leakage. For a government agency to use Generative AI on an external network, it must undergo a security review by the National Intelligence Service (NIS).
The FSS is said to have received permission to use Generative AI on the condition that it does not directly input sensitive internal data. The FSS plans to use Generative AI to improve efficiency in ancillary tasks such as organizing materials that have already been made public externally or analyzing papers on overseas financial supervision trends.
The Financial Services Commission (FSC) is also said to have allowed employees to access Generative AI such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude on external networks starting this month. Accordingly, related discussions for the FSS appear to be accelerating. FSS Governor Lee Chan-jin has reportedly emphasized improving work efficiency using Generative AI at recent executive meetings.
An FSS official said, "We have wrapped up key discussions with the Financial Services Commission (FSC) and expect to be able to use Generative AI soon."
