On the 9th, the domestic stock market also opened higher on the back of a sharp rebound in U.S. semiconductor stocks overnight. The KOSPI is jumping 4% and attempting to reenter the 8,000 level.
As of 9:03 a.m., the KOSPI is trading at 7,831.77, up 347.36 (4.64%) from the previous trading day. Individuals are net buying more than 350 billion won and lifting the index, while foreigners and institutions are net selling 244.4 billion won and 109.9 billion won, respectively.
By stock, Samsung Electronics jumped 5% to regain the 310,000 won level, and SK hynix also soared 7% to reclaim 2.05 million won. Samsung Electro-Mechanics, SK Square, and Hyundai Motor, among other large-cap stocks, are also rising.
It is seen as the effect of the surge in U.S. semiconductor stocks overnight. After semiconductor stocks plunged over the weekend, dip-buying flowed in. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOX) rose 5.61% on the day. Micron Technology (9.87%) and Intel (11.19%) surged.
However, the three major New York stock indexes were mixed. The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite and the Standard & Poor's (S&P) 500 rose, while the Dow fell 0.16% at the close.
Easing tensions in the Middle East is also seen as boosting investor sentiment. News emerged that Israel and Iran, which exchanged fire over the weekend, agreed to halt additional attacks.
However, the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield is still trading at 4.5%, remaining elevated. The 10-year Treasury closed at 4.35% the previous day.
The won also eased somewhat on the National Pension Service's currency hedging. It is the first time since the start of the year that the National Pension Service moved to hedge currency risk. The won-dollar rate opened at 1,529.4 won, down 5.6 won on the day.
At the same time, the KOSDAQ is trading at 944.76, up 33.37 (3.66%) from the previous trading day. While foreigners are net buying 13.7 billion won, individuals and institutions are selling 5.2 billion won and 8.9 billion won, respectively.
Buying is concentrating on semiconductor stocks that fell sharply the previous day. Jusung Engineering is jumping 8%, while Wonik IPS is up 9%, Jeju Semiconductor 7%, and HANA Micron 15%.
