Last year, securities companies' net income rose about 40% from a year earlier. A bull run in the domestic stock market sharply increased fee revenue, while foreign exchange gains from a stronger exchange rate drove the improvement in results.
According to the "2025 securities and futures company operating results (provisional)" released by the Financial Supervisory Service on the 25th, last year's net income of 61 securities companies totaled 9.6455 trillion won. That was up 38.9% from 6.9441 trillion won a year earlier.
By item, last year's securities companies' fee revenue was 16.6159 trillion won, up 3.6642 trillion won (28.3%) from a year earlier. Brokerage fees rose 37.3% to 8.6021 trillion won, fees in the IB institutional sector rose 9.2% to 4.0864 trillion won, and fees in the asset management institutional sector increased 26.4% to 1.6333 trillion won.
Proprietary trading gains and losses rose 170.2 billion won (1.4%) from a year earlier to 12.7456 trillion won. Stock and fund-related gains and losses increased by 1.0299 trillion won (1,545.6%), but derivatives-related gains and losses decreased by 7.189 trillion won (484.9%).
Other asset gains and losses rose 2.1474 trillion won (72.2%) from a year earlier to 5.1206 trillion won. Foreign exchange–related gains and losses driven by a sharp rise in the won-dollar rate increased by 1.686 trillion won, and interest revenue from expanded credit provision increased by 461.3 billion won.
However, selling, general and administrative expenses were 14.0036 trillion won, up 1.784 trillion won (14.6%) from a year earlier.
Looking at the asset status, securities companies' total assets last year were 943.9 trillion won, up 188.7 trillion won (25%) from a year earlier. Holdings of stocks and other securities increased by 82.7 trillion won (18%), and cash and deposits increased by 47.8 trillion won (37.5%).
Liabilities were 841.5 trillion won, up 178 trillion won (26.8%) from a year earlier, and capital was 102.4 trillion won, up 10.7 trillion won (11.7%).
The net capital ratio, a soundness indicator, was 915.1%, up 113.9 percentage points from 801.2% at the end of the previous year. All securities companies' net capital ratios exceeded the regulatory level (100%). The leverage ratio also rose 37.3 percentage points over the same period to 693.7%.
Meanwhile, the net income of three domestic futures companies last year was 88.56 billion won, up 8.64 billion won (10.8%) from a year earlier.
