On the 24th, the KOSPI index opened flat, slowing its gains after an overnight decline on Wall Street amid tariff uncertainty and debate over artificial intelligence (AI) profitability.
As of 9:12 a.m., the KOSPI index was at 5,827.26, down 18.83 points (0.32%) from the previous session. The KOSPI started trading at 5,853.48, up 0.13% from the previous session, then turned lower.
In the main board, foreigners are net sellers to the tune of 157.3 billion won. Institutions and individuals bought 148.0 billion won and 15.8 billion won, respectively.
Among large-cap stocks, Hanwha Aerospace and Doosan Enerbility are down 0.89% and 0.59%, respectively. In contrast, LG Energy Solution is up nearly 3%. Samsung Biologics (1.16%), SK hynix (0.42%), Samsung Electronics (0.41%), Kia (0.41%), and SK Square (0.17%) are also gaining.
The KOSDAQ index at the same time was at 1,151.50, down 0.49 point (0.04%) from the previous session. The KOSDAQ index also started at 1,159.76, up 0.67% from the previous session, then moved around flat.
In the KOSDAQ market, foreigners and institutions are selling 123.5 billion won and 45.3 billion won, respectively. Individuals net bought 167.6 billion won.
Among top KOSDAQ market caps, Caregen (-2.06%), Kolon TissueGene (-0.98%), and LEENO Industrial (-0.21%) are declining. Sam Chun Dang Pharm (2.27%), Rainbow Robotics (1.73%), EcoPro (0.89%), ABL Bio (0.58%), and Alteogen (0.49%) are rising.
In the Seoul foreign exchange market, the won-dollar exchange rate opened at 1,444.7 won per $1, up 4.7 won from the previous session.
Meanwhile, on the 23rd (local time), New York stocks were weak as shares of corporations expected to be hit during AI's development slumped and aftershocks continued from a ruling that the Trump administration's reciprocal tariff policy was unlawful.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 48,804.06, down 1.66% from the previous session. The Standard & Poor's (S&P) 500 index fell 1.04% to 6,837.75, and the Nasdaq lost 1.13% to 22,627.27.
