Content Technologies, a company builder specializing in music intellectual property (IP) content investment, has launched a new fundraising effort. It is understood to have decided to raise more than 60 billion won and plans to expand beyond existing music IP distribution businesses to creating music IP using labels.
On the 19th, investment banking industry sources said Content Technologies recently decided to raise a Series B round and has begun actively contacting financial investors (FIs) such as venture capital firms. It has set out to raise more than 60 billion won, about three years after a Series A round in 2022 that raised 50 billion won.
The company's valuation is expected to be around 300 billion won. That is more than a 50% increase from the 200 billion won valuation recognized at the time of the Series A fundraising. The company is understood to be conducting fundraising efforts targeting both existing and new investors directly.
Content Technologies started in 2020 as an investment company specializing in music IP content. Its main focus is company building—planning, establishing or investing in tech companies based on music IP—and it has established or invested in subsidiaries such as Musistics, a secondary work production company, and Deep Studio, a virtual idol management company.
Content Technologies drew market attention in 2021 when it sold Beyond Music, its music IP investment platform operating subsidiary, to a private equity fund (PEF) manager. At the time, Praxis Capital Partners bought 60% of Beyond Music's management stake for 100 billion won.
Investor interest is said to be strong. Content Technologies, which had focused on investing in companies that own IP acquisitions and content-based technologies, recently acquired 100% equity in full-service entertainment company IST Entertainment, expanding its business into directly creating and securing new music IP.
IST Entertainment is regarded as a K-pop label launched in 2021 when Play M Entertainment and Cre.ker Entertainment under Kakao Entertainment merged.
An IB industry official said, "Content Technologies is already regarded as a hidden powerhouse in the K-pop field with about 10 subsidiaries in the music IP content sector," adding, "With K-pop's continued global popularity and the company's expansion into directly creating music IP, investor interest is high."
