Seo Sang-jun, head of the Seoul office's infrastructure institutional sector at EQT Partners, one of the world's three largest private equity fund (PEF) managers, who has led the firm's entry into the Korean market, is leaving the company. Since the opening of the EQT Seoul office in Feb. 2023, Seo has overseen Korea infrastructure investments and delivered results.
It comes just a little over two years after a striking promotion to "global partner," a key decision-maker at the global headquarters, that drew attention.
According to the investment banking (IB) industry on the 6th, Representative Seo Sang-jun recently conveyed an intention to resign to EQT Partners.
Seo's next destination has not yet been decided. In 2024, Seo was appointed a global partner—one of only about 15 among roughly 1,900 employees worldwide—proving a solid standing within EQT. A global partner is a core position that participates in major investment decisions at headquarters.
As soon as EQT took the field in the Korean market, Seo stunned the industry by clinching a big deal to acquire SK shieldus, the No. 2 company in the domestic security industry, for about 2.4 trillion won. Since then, backed by massive financial resources, EQT has been cited as a leading candidate in every large transaction worth more than 1 trillion won, placing EQT at the center of the domestic IB market.
EQT's Seoul office currently employs about 20 experts across three business institutional sectors: infrastructure, private capital, and real estate. The infrastructure institutional sector that Seo has led is said to be jointly overseen by Yeon Da-ye, head of EQT Private Capital in charge of the domestic PE institutional sector.
EQT is a global investment group affiliated with Sweden's Wallenberg family and is the world's third-largest private equity fund (PEF) manager. Assets under management (AUM) total about $270 billion (about 400 trillion won). In Korea, it has invested in SK shieldus, KJ Environment, Remember, and DOUZONE BIZON CO.
