A delivery rider who targeted vehicles backing up or changing lanes abruptly to cause intentional crashes has been sent to prosecutors. The rider was found to have swindled a total of 87 million won in insurance payouts through 33 staged crashes.
On the 14th, the Financial Supervisory Service, working in cooperation with the Traffic Accident Compensation Supervisory Service (TACSS), said it had caught a motorcycle delivery worker, identified as A, who defrauded non-life insurers and mutual aid associations of insurance payouts. After a police investigation, A was sent to prosecutors.
The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) conducted a planned investigation through a working-level council with TACSS and others into a suspect in a series of intentional motorcycle crashes identified in the Daejeon area, and requested a criminal probe. Based on the joint findings of the FSS and TACSS, the Daejeon Dunsan Police Station sent A, who exploited blind spots in cars to cause intentional crashes, to prosecutors on the 10th of this month.
A, a motorcycle delivery worker, targeted vehicles that needed to back up on the road, intentionally approaching with the motorcycle and causing staged crashes with the reversing vehicles. In particular, when trucks and other vehicles were backing up, A waited without trying to avoid a collision and caused multiple staged crashes by making contact between the motorcycle and the reversing vehicles.
A also staged crashes by not slowing down, or even accelerating, toward vehicles making abrupt lane changes, and rear-ending them or striking the left or right side.
The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) noted that there have been many recent cases of motorcycles causing intentional crashes targeting vehicles that violate traffic laws, such as reckless lane changes or one-way violations, and urged drivers to prevent insurance fraud by obeying traffic laws and practicing defensive driving.
