Hanyang Securities said on the 1st that an analysis of active accounts of customers with more than 10 million won in entrusted assets from January to October this year showed that the larger the asset size, the lower the turnover and the higher the return compared with the market average.
According to Hanyang Securities' analysis, the average return of high-balance accounts with more than 1 billion won in entrusted assets came to 80.5%. That far outpaced the combined average gain of KOSPI and KOSDAQ over the same period (51.5%).
Accounts with more than 100 million won also posted a high average return of 70.9%. Next were ▲50 million–100 million won at 55.4% ▲10 million–50 million won at 51.7%, exceeding the market average across all asset bands. Overall, the average return for accounts with more than 10 million won was 57.3%.
The higher the high-asset account, the higher the return. Hanyang Securities said that is because top-tier asset accounts commonly pursued a strategy of stable positioning centered on large-cap stocks and maintained low turnover.
Differences also appeared in portfolio construction. Most top accounts chose a "concentrated few-stocks" approach, compressed to around five names. The firm said they maximized gains in a bull market through a focus on large-cap and leading stocks rather than broad diversification.
Major top accounts proactively built positions in large-cap stocks in market-leading sectors this year, such as semiconductors, defense, and shipbuilding. Representative holdings included Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, Doosan Enerbility, Hanwha Ocean, and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.
Given that semiconductors, defense, and shipbuilding led the market this year, Hanyang Securities said top accounts secured performance by investing in core sectors before the rebound fully took hold and enduring volatility.
A Hanyang Securities official said, "The higher the high-asset account, the more it tends to minimize the number of core stocks and focus on sectors leading the market," adding, "We were able to secure high returns through a portfolio strategy centered on large-cap and leading stocks rather than individual names."
