Financial Supervisory Service Governor Lee Chan-jin said on the 18th that he would handle insurers' unjust nonpayment of indemnity health insurance claims under a "zero tolerance" principle.
At the "2nd forum to strengthen financial consumer protection" held that day, Lee said, "As issues related to indemnity health insurance have surfaced, the need for overall improvements is being raised."
Lee said, "We will strengthen planned investigations and coordination with investigative authorities on fraud involving medical institutions."
Lee went on to explain that, while excluding coverage for nonreimbursable items with high risk of overtreatment, the coinsurance rate for nonreimbursable treatments for nonserious conditions will also be raised. He said the linkage between reimbursable treatments and the national health insurance policy will be strengthened to remove factors that induce excessive medical care.
Lee also said the Financial Supervisory Service plans to expand insurers' guidance and consultation procedures for consumers. The aim is to ensure consumers clearly understand key information, such as claims standards, and can decide whether to receive treatment.
Lee said, "To remedy the problems of indemnity health insurance, we will prepare consumer protection measures together with the relevant ministries."
