It has been revealed that the number of investors holding virtual assets exceeding 1 billion won in domestic transactions has surpassed 10,000.
Currently, taxation on virtual asset investment income has been postponed until after January 2027. A capital gains tax is also not imposed.
According to data submitted by the Financial Supervisory Service to People Power Party lawmaker Park Sung-hoon on the 24th, as of the 5th, the number of individuals holding virtual assets exceeding 1 billion won was counted at 10,810.
The value of virtual assets held by these individuals in the top five domestic transactions (Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit, and Gopax) averaged 2.22889 billion won per person. This figure exceeds 200 times the average holding amount (10.27 million won) of the total users of the top five exchanges, which was 10,866,371.
When looking at individuals holding virtual assets exceeding 1 billion won by age group, those in their 50s were the most numerous at 3,994, followed by those in their 40s (3,086), those aged 60 and above (2,426), and those in their 30s (1,167). The 20s had the least at 137, but their average holding amount was higher than that of other age groups at 2.68871 billion won. The average holding amounts for those in their 40s and 50s were 2.13956 billion won and 2.14439 billion won, respectively, while those in their 30s and 60s had similar amounts of 2.36559 billion won and 2.39064 billion won.
Among those holding virtual assets exceeding 1 billion won, 76% (8,242 individuals) were users of Upbit. Given that Upbit is the largest exchange in Korea with abundant liquidity, it is considered easy for individuals to frequently buy and sell large amounts of virtual assets.
Users of the top five exchanges recently surpassed 10 million. This figure is the total count of users who hold accounts capable of transactions as of the 5th, representing one-fifth of Korea's population (approximately 51.69 million).
Upbit had the largest number of users at 5,681,871, followed by Bithumb (3,949,317), Coinone (815,585), Korbit (253,783), and Gopax (165,815). In terms of average holding amounts by age group, the 20s had 2.06 million won, the 30s had 6.32 million won, the 40s had 11.37 million won, the 50s had 17.68 million won, and those aged 60 and above had 23.4 million won.
