Lee Jae-myung's government has nominated Lee Eok-won, a special professor at Seoul National University, as the first candidate for chairman of the Financial Services Commission.
Kang Hoon, the chief of staff to the president, held a briefing at the Yongsan presidential office on the 13th and said, "The nominee, Lee Eok-won, will faithfully implement the financial philosophy of Lee Jae-myung's government, which is based on his experience as an economic bureaucrat, through financial policies that alleviate the tears of ordinary people and revitalize healthy capital markets."
The candidate for chairman of the Financial Services Commission, Lee Eok-won, is regarded as an expert in macroeconomic policy with a background as a traditional economic bureaucrat.
After graduating from Kyungshin High School in Seoul, the candidate attended the Department of Economics at Seoul National University and completed the doctoral program in economics at the University of Missouri in the United States.
He entered public service in 1991 through the 35th administrative examination and has held positions such as director of future strategy and director of comprehensive policy at the Ministry of Economy and Finance. After the launch of Moon Jae-in's government, he primarily led tasks related to macroeconomic policy formulation as the director of the Economic Structural Reform Bureau and the director of the Economic Policy Bureau.
In May 2020, he was appointed as the economic policy secretary to the president's office, and in March 2021, he was appointed as the first deputy minister of the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
