A new type of fraud is gaining momentum, in which proposals for insurance fraud are made to individuals showing interest after they post ads on social media (SNS) recruiting for loans and high-paying part-time jobs.
The Financial Supervisory Service issued a consumer alert on the new type of insurance fraud using posts on SNS, to prevent fresh graduates in their 20s and 30s from being involved in crimes, it announced on the 12th.
The FSS, in cooperation with the Incheon Central Police Station, captured 32 individuals, including a broker surnamed A and an insurance planner surnamed B, who led the insurance fraud and conspired with false patients, on charges of embezzling 1.13 billion won in insurance money.
A is accused of attracting the general public by posting ads under titles such as 'loan' and 'urgent need for money' in online loan cafes, proposing insurance fraud during the consultation process, and providing forged medical certificates from specific hospitals after analyzing the insurance coverage details of those who responded. A acquired the method of embezzling large insurance payouts through insurance planner B but subsequently led insurance fraud independently. B is accused of embezzling insurance money using forged medical certificates in the names of family and acquaintances.
Thirty-one false patients are accused of submitting the forged medical certificates received from A and others to the insurance company, embezzling 1.13 billion won in diagnosis insurance money. They are also accused of printing the forged medical certificates and stamping them instead of obtaining a doctor's signature when claiming insurance money from the insurance company.
The FSS noted, 'If you are advised that you can make money using insurance during consultations about loans or high-paying part-time jobs posted on SNS, it is insurance fraud, and you must stop the consultation.' It added, 'Those who are complicit or supportive of the enticing proposals from the fraud perpetrators, in addition to the offenders leading the fraud, may also become accomplices to insurance fraud and be subject to criminal punishment, so it is essential to be particularly cautious not to get involved in insurance fraud.'
