Hanwha Investment & Securities announced on the 7th that Jung Min-jung, an assistant manager at the Daegu WM Center, received a commendation from the Daegu Suseong Police Station for preventing a voice phishing scam worth 700 million won.
On the 17th of last month, Assistant Manager Jung Min-jung suspected voice phishing when a customer who visited just before the market close sold stocks worth 700 million won and requested a margin loan and cash withdrawal. He immediately shared the situation with the staff at the Daegu WM Center and asked the customer for specific reasons for the withdrawal. However, the customer avoided providing a detailed response.
Consequently, the staff at the Daegu WM Center determined the situation as abnormal and sent the customer away, citing the end of business hours, and requested a payment freeze on the account and police cooperation.
The next day, when the customer returned and requested cash withdrawal of the entire stock sale amount of 700 million won, the staff at the Daegu WM Center, who had been waiting with police, managed to persuade the customer, thus preventing a major voice phishing scam.
Staff at Hanwha Investment & Securities Daegu WM Center explained that they were able to respond quickly to the actual situation because they were familiar with the response procedures through training on voice phishing incident cases conducted by the company.
Assistant Manager Jung stated, "I acted with the belief that protecting the customer's assets is the top priority," adding, "Thanks to the active cooperation of my fellow employees, the consumer protection team, and the police, we were able to prevent the damage."
Lee Seong-woo, head of the Beomeo Police Station in Daegu Suseong, expressed gratitude, saying, "As cases of voice phishing through securities accounts continue to rise, I deeply appreciate the swift response of the Hanwha Investment & Securities Daegu WM Center," and noted, "Ongoing attention and cooperation from financial institutions are a great help in preventing damage."
