SK Telecom has responded to the hacking incident involving user information by adding authentication measures among financial companies, including banks. This is aimed at preventing crimes where financial transactions are attempted using mobile phones activated with leaked personal information.
According to the financial sector on the 29th, Hana Bank has established additional procedures, including facial recognition, for the non-face-to-face account opening process for SK Telecom subscribers starting today. KB Kookmin Bank also modified its system to require video facial authentication in addition to existing authentication procedures for major financial transactions exclusively for SK Telecom users starting from 5 p.m. the day before.
Shinhan Bank and Woori Bank are requiring additional facial recognition authentication for customers attempting electronic financial transactions with devices other than their previously registered mobile phones, regardless of the communication company, not just SK Telecom. NH Nonghyup Bank is also considering expanding the application of facial authentication as part of strengthening its abnormal transaction detection system.
Additionally, banks are encouraging customers to subscribe to the 'credit transaction blocking service' and 'non-face-to-face account opening safe blocking service.' By subscribing to this service, customers can preemptively block new credit (loan) transactions or the very act of non-face-to-face regular account openings.
Earlier, on the 24th, the Financial Supervisory Service urged all financial sectors to 'introduce additional authentication measures if authentication is completed solely through mobile phone identity verification or text messages.'
Subsequently, KB Life Insurance, KB Insurance, and NH Nonghyup Life suspended the identity verification services for SK Telecom and SK Telecom's low-cost phone subscribers. KB Kookmin Card also announced precautionary measures for damage prevention and heightened the detection level of its abnormal transaction detection system. KB Life and KB Capital also notified on their websites about the suspension of mobile phone logins and posted advisories for damage prevention.
