The KOSPI index, which fell 3% the previous day due to the resumption of short selling, is rebounding after a day.

As of 9:04 a.m. on the 1st, the KOSPI index recorded 2,506.30, up 25.18 points (1.01%) from the previous transaction day. In the securities market, individuals are buying 34.3 billion won. Foreign investors and institutions are buying 7.8 billion won and 26.9 billion won, respectively.

The KOSDAQ index rose 7.86 points (1.17%) to 680.71 compared to the previous day. In the KOSDAQ market, individuals are net buying 15.6 billion won, while foreign investors and institutions are net selling 12 billion won and 300 million won, respectively.

On the previous day, short selling transactions were fully resumed in the domestic stock market for the first time in a year and a half. The total scale of short selling transactions on that day amounted to 17 trillion won. Financial authorities banned short selling entirely due to the detection of illegal naked short selling cases involving global investment banks (IBs) in November 2023 and proposed regulatory improvements to prevent this.

On the previous day, the New York stock market closed mixed ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement on mutual tariffs, two days prior. There was a strong sell-off in technology stocks early on, but bargain-hunting emerged, focusing on blue-chip stocks.

On the 31st (Eastern U.S. Time), the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 40,001.76, up 417.86 points (1.00%) from the previous session. The Standard & Poor's (S&P) 500 index rose 30.91 points (0.55%) to 5,611.85, while the Nasdaq Composite recorded a decline of 23.70 points (0.14%) to 17,299.29.
