IGIS Asset Management announced on the 25th that it will actively promote the 'Seoul Hilton Digital Archiving Project' to digitally preserve existing architectural spaces during the redevelopment process of the Millennium Hilton Hotel in Namsan, Seoul.
IGIS Asset Management will partner with the space-based content creation group TechCapsule to carry out a comprehensive recording project utilizing cutting-edge 3D scanning and digital twin technology.
The core of the project is the acquisition of precise digital data using cutting-edge 3D scanning technology and the process of distributing this as public information. The high-resolution 3D spatial data of the hotel’s interior and exterior, lobby, and key architectural elements will be donated as public data to the city of Seoul for future urban planning and architectural research.
This project will promote physical preservation alongside digital restoration. IGIS Asset Management plans to create a 'Heritage Atrium' that retains symbolic elements of the Hilton Hotel lobby in the redeveloped 'Iota Seoul' site.
This space is a modern reinterpretation while preserving the main architectural elements of the existing lobby, such as the atrium shape, columns, and stairs. It underwent several design revisions based on the opinions of various external experts, including the original designer, and the final plan was approved during integrated review.
Additionally, the primary data will be secured before demolition, and the process of demolition along with the records of the Hilton Hotel will be documented in video form. This includes interviews with architects, urban planning experts, and cultural heritage researchers. The collected materials will be built into an open public archive for on and offline exhibitions and research. The company described this project as the first comprehensive archiving case in the country that records the entire process of urban change from demolition to redevelopment.
A representative from IGIS Asset Management noted, 'This digital archiving project is an initiative to document the process of consolidation between Seoul's history and future, presenting new possibilities for architectural preservation.' They added, 'We aim to set a precedent for the digital archiving of more buildings in the future.'
