Singer MC MONG (47, real name Shin Dong-hyun) once again became the center of attention after personally handing a student one semester's tuition on a university festival stage.
MC MONG took the stage at Kyonggi University on the 11th and heated up the atmosphere by performing a medley of hits including "Circus," "Ice Cream," "Sarang Beombuk," and "Jeolmeun Nal."
Toward the end of the performance, MC MONG brought out a pre-prepared gift box and held a special on-site event. He called a student who had been responding with exceptional enthusiasm throughout the stage onto the stage and, after hearing the story that the student "is working three part-time jobs," surprised the audience by handing over a bundle of cash.
The amount is reported to be equivalent to one semester's tuition. MC MONG urged the student, "Be sure to use it for studying," and offered warm encouragement.
This event was not an impromptu performance. Earlier, MC MONG had announced on his TikTok live broadcast the news that he would close the Kyonggi University festival and pledged, "I will pick one student and pay one semester's tuition in cash," as a promise. At the time he also said, "What's a birthday? I believe good deeds will come back in some way."
As he handed over the money he said, "I don't know, whether you spend it on alcohol or clothes. But it's money I received from your school anyway," and confessed, "I just want to give it to someone who stands out to me." In effect, he returned part of the guarantee he received for the festival performance to a student.
MC MONG has faced various allegations related to One Hundred Label, which he co-founded with Cha Ga-won and p_Arc Group chairman Cha Ga-won, but he denied them fully on his live broadcast and said, "To avoid hiding amid speculation and misunderstanding, a singer can prove it on stage. I want to meet you through my music," announcing concert plans and a comeback. Also, after recently alleging that actor Kim Min-jong was involved in illegal gambling, Kim Min-jong filed a criminal complaint against MC MONG, but the complaint was withdrawn following MC MONG's apology.
Because this good deed took place amid such controversy, reactions have been mixed.
Some internet users offered positive support, saying, "In any case, it's a real good deed that greatly helped the student," "It's impressive that he actually fulfilled his live pledge," and "It's nice to see him returning his appearance fee to the student."
On the other hand, some reacted coldly, saying, "Isn't this a calculated move to repair his image?" and "Is he making a human-interest story?" < [Photo] OSEN DB
