Comedian Lee Bong-won recalled the moment he first heard the news that his wife, Park Mi-sun, had been diagnosed with cancer. He said he was so shocked by the sudden news that his mind went blank, and he confessed that many changes occurred in their marriage as he shared his wife's battle.
On the 14th, a video titled "'There are seven pieces of metal in my body~' back surgery, orbital fracture, implants… Bong-won with not a single part of his body intact" was released on the YouTube channel Rolling Thunder Shin Yeoseong.
That day, Lee Kyung-sil cheered for Lee Bong-won, who continues various activities such as business and broadcasting, saying, "I like that you work hard, oppa."
Introducing himself as a "small business owner," Lee Bong-won said he does not rest during breaks and is constantly learning new things. He said he attends academies for English and Chinese as well as guitar and piano, and that his private education costs about 1.2 million won per month. Lee Bong-won said the reason he keeps challenging himself is, "If you are curious, you are young." He added that whereas in the past he tended to inform his wife Park Mi-sun unilaterally when starting new things, "now I'll discuss them first," showing a changed side that drew laughter.
Naturally, Park Mi-sun's fight with cancer came up. Lee Kyung-sil cautiously brought up that when she first heard the news of Park Mi-sun's cancer diagnosis she thought the shock must have been considerable, saying, "Her face looks better. She seems more at ease." Recalling about a year ago, Lee Bong-won admitted, "I received it by text. I froze on the spot. I couldn't think of anything and my mind went blank." He continued, "I thought something like this could happen to me too. I didn't know what to do," expressing the helplessness he felt at the time.
One of the first things that came to mind was treatment. Lee Bong-won said he was prepared to bear the medical expenses himself, but that Park Mi-sun had her insurance well prepared. Still, at the time his only thought was, "I have to get treatment no matter what and get better," as he recalled the burden he felt as the head of the household. He said he did not intend to quit his business despite Park Mi-sun's battle, explaining, "I had to earn money for treatment," as the reason he continued working.
Instead, he tried to take on the husbandly roles he had not been able to fulfill. He said, "I thought I should take care of the things I couldn't before," and that he accompanied his wife to the hospital. He also conveyed a belated realization, saying, "I felt that I hadn't paid much attention until now."
Changes came to their marriage as well. Lee Bong-won said their expressions toward each other became kinder and that "their relationship improved." Lee Kyung-sil relayed a story she heard from Park Mi-sun, who recently had a birthday. She said Park, who usually does not boast about her husband, was deeply moved when Lee Bong-won stood in line himself to buy a famous cake for her. Speaking of the happiness Park Mi-sun feels these days, Lee Kyung-sil said, "She said she feels like she is starting anew."
Lee Bong-won also acknowledged that his feelings toward his wife had changed. Recalling the eight weeks he appeared on a program with Park Mi-sun, he said, "I felt different than during our newlywed days." He added, "I realized again how precious my wife is," and said he now tries to express that feeling directly, which moved listeners.
