Actor Jung Jun-won candidly revealed his honest feelings about the torrent of comments on his looks.
On the 14th morning at a cafe in Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam District, Seoul, an end-of-series interview with MBC Friday-Saturday drama 'A Bona fide Killer' actor Jung Jun-won was held. Jung Jun-won played Kwon Taesung, a devoted husband and a social affairs reporter in the drama, leaving a strong impression with his characteristic gentle smile and life-anchored acting.
In A Bona fide Killer, which is based on a webtoon of the same name, Kwon Taesung is depicted as the official handsome man in the work, and his looks are so handsome that his wife Yoo Bona falls for his visuals to the extent that all kinds of situations and actions are overlooked because of it.
However, reactions were mixed after Jung Jun-won was cast. Regarding this, Jung Jun-won said, "When original webtoons are adapted into a drama, settings often change. When I first read the script, that setting wasn't there, so I didn't know."
He continued, "Later, when I looked at the original work's setting, when I saw the drama script it felt like an unrealistically affectionate husband and father, so I focused on how to create that," and added, "And when I talked with the director, I thought it was important to show charm in a realistic way, so I didn't pay too much attention. I think fans who expected the original work would have been disappointed."
Asked whether he was hurt by the continued visual controversy differing from the original, he explained, "There was nothing like that, and I think people can certainly think that way," adding, "Rather than it being about me, I believed I could persuade viewers of Taesung's sincerity in the script. I'm grateful that many people seemed to like it."
Asked whether he had a personal weapon beyond his looks while filming 'A Bona fide Killer,' he said, "I tried to focus on an unreal, almost fantasy-level great love and kindness that loves his family more than anyone. There are many kinds of the word 'cool,' but I thought I could appear as a cool father and husband."
When asked if there were memorable reactions, Jung Jun-won said, "I watched YouTube clips to see what people thought. As you know, there seemed to be a lot of unfavorable reactions early on. Seeing the change as it moved toward the latter part, I felt grateful and extremely relieved about the overall mood," adding, "Anyway, I'm an actor, so the reaction that I performed the role well stands out in my memory. That reaction felt rewarding and I was grateful."
When asked whether he managed his appearance for the character Kwon Taesung in 'A Bona fide Killer,' he laughed and said, "I'm doing my best in my own way. Viewers have different tastes and standards. I'm doing my best to manage myself."
Asked whether he was disappointed that he was judged first by his visuals rather than his acting, Jung Jun-won admitted, "Of course it can't feel good," while also saying, "But it seems like something you have to endure. It would be very upsetting to be criticized for acting, but I was never that type of actor to begin with, so I wasn't upset."
Then Jung Jun-won said, "No one would be happy being called ugly. But I'm continuing to work on my appearance."
