On that day, Ryu, formerly of Asiana, opened up about the disciplinary culture she experienced while working as a flight attendant while talking with Sung Hae-eun, formerly of Korean Air Lines.
Sung Hae-eun said, "They say the hierarchy had largely faded by our time. In the past, junior staff had to do senior morning calls, and they even had to wash stockings."
Ryu I-seo explained, "The local times are all different. So you had to call them. 'Senior so-and-so, this is so-and-so. Have you woken up? What time is it?' things like that. But gradually it disappeared as managers told us not to do morning calls."
She added, "If you didn't do it, it was a big deal. If you didn't do it, what would happen to your mind... that's what happened."
She said one aspect of Korean Air Lines' corporate culture is calling seniors 'eonni.' Sung Hae-eun said, "Even a senior who clearly looks younger than me must be called 'eonni.' If a flight attendant doesn't call someone 'eonni,' they say, 'Am I so young that you can't call me eonni?'"
Junji n, who was listening, asked, "What about male flight attendants?" and Sung Hae-eun said, "Male seniors are called 'seonbaenim.' They are not called 'oppa.'"
Ryu also said, "The youngest had to hold the elevator and enter at the tail. You must not cross in front of seniors to enter," adding, "You also had to eat together. If you didn't go out, you'd get a grudge against you."
Meanwhile, Ryu married Shinwa group member Junjin in 2020.
