Comedian couple and "Heunhan Nam-mae" members Han Eu-tteum and Jang Da-un cried after learning their second child tested positive for a rare disease.
On the 10th, the "Heunhan Nam-mae" YouTube channel posted a video titled "HeunTto tests positive for a rare disease...? And Da-un's depression treatment...."
That day the couple, inside a car, said, "We're going to the hospital again today in tears. I'm so upset and conflicted. To get to the point, we're going to test for the Yagi gene," and opened up. They added, "After 48 hours from birth they take blood from the heel to run tests. The hospital contacted us," saying they had done newborn screening for congenital metabolic disorders.
They continued, "The names are difficult. In the lysosomal Pompe disease section, Garam (the second child) tested positive. The name alone is frightening. My heart sank. I could only cry. I tried to hold it in and hold it in, but when the tears burst out I couldn't control myself," they said, pouring out their anguished feelings.
They added, "I looked it up on the internet and there are quite a few people like us who had a retest. They said we have to go to a big hospital and even do parental gene tests and a second retest," and said, "I'm on the way to the obstetrics recheck now, and it's frustrating waiting a week for the results. I try to forget, but in empty moments it hits me. People say it will be okay, but a parent's heart doesn't feel that way." Mother Jang Da-un couldn't hold back tears as she spoke. She added, "It's the baby's seventh day of life and I don't know what's going on. This is where the crying stops. I think it will be okay," as she steadied herself.
Mother Jang Da-un also had a consultation with a doctor after her depression score reached a level that required a hospital visit.
After the retest the couple received a call from the hospital. Jang Da-un said, "The lysosomal storage disorder Pompe disease came back below the threshold on the retest — it was around 1.3 or 1.4 low — but this time on retest it actually fell to 0.8. Only Pompe disease had been detected, but this time Fabry disease also tested positive," delivering the shocking news and saying, "The doctor said it's really a rare disease and that it's likely an error for two to come up positive together." The couple immediately went for another retest, saying, "We hope this ends this time."
The result of the second retest arrived by text message, and fortunately they received the reply, "No significant findings were detected."
The couple expressed relief, saying, "We have nothing more to wish for. We spent more than a week in tears," and father Han Eu-tteum said, "I understood what it feels like for your legs to give out on the street." Jang Da-un showed tears again, saying, "Being healthy is not something to be taken for granted; it is truly something to be thankful for."
Han Eu-tteum and Jang Da-un were classmates who joined SBS as comedians, and through their YouTube channel "Heunhan Nam-mae," which has 3 million subscribers, they have presented sibling sitcom content and received great love. In reality the two are a married couple who wed in 2022, and last May they became parents with the birth of their first son. About eight months after the first child's birth they announced the news of a second child, once again receiving fans' congratulations.
