Actor 유해진 said he felt burdened taking on a work inspired by the assassination attempt on the late First Lady Yuk Young-soo.
On the morning of the 11th at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, an interview was held with lead actor 유해진 of the film 'Assassin(s)'.
The film 'Assassin(s)' (director Heo Jin-ho, produced by (주)하이브미디어코프, distributed by (주)하이브미디어코프) is a story that追es the suspicions and backers of the first lady assassination attempt that shocked Korea on Aug. 15, 1974. It is a work that adds some imagination to the facts surrounding the assassination attempt on the late First Lady Yuk Young-soo. In the film, 유해진 plays Cheol-gu, a chief inspector at Jungbu Police Station who directly witnessed the scene of the first lady assassination attempt, portraying with density a detective's obsession and weighty conviction in pursuit of the truth.
When asked how he felt when he first encountered a work inspired by the assassination attempt on the late First Lady Yuk Young-soo, 유해진 explained, "'This incident?' I felt that kind of burden. Because of that burden I read it carefully, page by page. After reading it, I think I spoke concretely about my feelings and such. I discussed in detail with the director the parts I enjoyed reading and the parts that made me a little cautious."
However, as the work adds imagination to an actual incident, it could be sensitively received as a conspiracy theory. Regarding this, 유해진 said, "That's right. At first, if I had been asked to do it with the original screenplay that was first given to me, I probably couldn't have done it. We exchanged opinions several times, and that's why I could do it. We shared the cautious parts. I think they accepted many of the parts where I said, 'Shouldn't we be careful about this?' As those changes were made, it became the film it is now. To that extent, it is not direct and is an open story, and since the incident is something everyone knows, it seemed okay, so I did it."
When asked why he decided to appear despite such burdens and cautious parts, he said, "The character density was good. I liked that from each position they approached the incident and pursued together what the truth is, matching like pieces of a cube. Sharing information and getting closer to who is behind it was dense and fun."
When asked how he balanced reality and imagination to build the character, he said, "I think it's the same for any work. I treated it as a single work and moved with the work and the character. Of course, how to express emotion is my basic task, but other than that there wasn't anything particularly difficult. I adjusted accordingly."
Especially known for his roles in various period pieces, 유해진 has earned praise from audiences for naturally blending into each era in every work. Asked his secret, 유해진 replied immediately, "The secret is appearance. It's very simple. Appearance," drawing laughter. He added jokingly, "I actually think it helps a lot. I don't worry much about those things. For costume or makeup, I tell them, 'Bring anything.' Modern dramas are harder, actually." (Continued in interview②.)
