On that day, the Oliver Ssam couple shared recent updates from their visit to Korea with their two daughters, Cherry and Sky. In particular, they candidly revealed the background that led them to head to the United States after marrying in 2016.
One of the couple's worries at the time was the steep price of housing in Seoul. Then Texas, where they could live amid nature, emerged as a new option. In particular, the in-laws showed them a vast tract of land and forest, saying "we will build you a house," and the couple decided after being told that at the time land was about 500 won per pyeong.
The land they acquired totaled a whopping 4,039 pyeong. The money the couple had saved at the time was about 60 million won. But the real problems began after they bought the land. They planned to get a bank loan to build a house, but because they had no income in the U.S. at the time, they could not get a loan. In this process, Oliver Ssam said they used so-called "hard money" through relatives. At first he described it as "sachaeg," then immediately corrected himself, saying "it is not sachaeg," acknowledging it was a slip of the tongue and drawing laughter.
The conditions were especially harsh. They had to repay the money in about a year, and if they failed to do so they could lose the house and land — a very burdensome condition. Recalling the time, Oliver Ssam explained that they had no choice, saying essentially "there was no option. This was it." At the time their YouTube subscriber count was about 300,000, not the current 2.25 million, so they had no choice but to work even harder to repay the money.
The house-building process was not smooth either. To save on labor costs, Oliver Ssam participated personally in the construction, and it took six years to complete the house. Because of this, during construction they had to live in the in-laws' house. Now they have well over 2 million subscribers and share their wide Texas life, receiving much love, but at the start they could not even get a loan and risked losing their house and land.
