Nam Gyu-ri, formerly of the group SeeYa, looked back on the period when the group suspended activities and said, "I thought I would never be able to sing again."
On the 10th, a video titled "Lee Jin-sung and Nam Gyu-ri meet for the first time in 20 years" was released on the "Jinjja Lee Jin-sung" channel. In the video, Monday Kiz's Lee Jin-sung and Nam Gyu-ri met after a long time and looked back on the years they have lived as singers.
As it turned out, the two were classmates in the practical music department. Nam Gyu-ri recalled Lee Jin-sung's college days, saying, "We met in college, but there was a very long period when we didn't see each other," and "It was a time when I watched people who were good at singing closely, and you were one of them."
Before they knew it, Lee Jin-sung had become a father, and the two marveled at each other's time of continuing music activities for about 20 years without giving up. Nam Gyu-ri said, "It is an incredible thing that we became singers." Lee Jin-sung also said, "There are no friends who have kept doing music until now," adding, "Enduring is more important than being good. Being good is basic, but whether you let go when it's hard is what matters," and Nam Gyu-ri deeply agreed.
In particular, Nam Gyu-ri pointed to around 2009, when SeeYa's activities were suspended, as a period when she experienced a major trial in her life. Nam Gyu-ri recalled her feelings at the time, saying, "I stopped being SeeYa. Around 2009 it felt like a boycott and I thought, 'I'll never be able to sing again.'"
At that time, an unexpected new path opened. Nam Gyu-ri said she happened to get a chance to participate in a work by writer Kim Soo-hyun, recalling, "He gave me a script and told me to try acting. He told me, 'Come to the production company starting tomorrow and learn acting.'" She said she endured about three months of harsh acting lessons, and a new life as an actor began. Nam Gyu-ri said, "Like a miracle, I received a rookie award and got to do a miniseries," revealing that she encountered unexpected opportunities after her singing activities stopped.
But her relationship with singing, which she had tried to avoid, did not end. Nam Gyu-ri said, "Even though I avoided being a singer and worked hard, singing kept calling me." She mentioned from the moment she stood on stage again with SeeYa members through "Sugarman" to the process of reuniting as one for the recent 20th anniversary, saying, "In the end, the stage and the song called me," expressing deep emotion.
Nam Gyu-ri said her outlook on difficult times also changed. She referred to the major trial that came to her as, "I took it to mean that I should think a lot and think again," and said that rather, through that time she began to ponder how to face the world. She added that she tried to turn the trial into something positive by practicing good deeds. Hearing this, Lee Jin-sung told Nam Gyu-ri, "You are a person with deep inner self. You are a great person," encouraging his long-time colleague.
When SeeYa suspended activities, Nam Gyu-ri thought, "I would never be able to sing." After meeting a new path called acting, she ultimately returned to the music and stages that called her, and her 20 years added to the poignancy.
