YouTuber Park We stopped activities about three weeks ago amid criticism after releasing KTX fall accident CCTV, and subscriber count changes have also calmed. When and how will he return to activities?
As of 9 a.m. on the 10th, Park We's YouTube channel 'Weracle' has 950,000 subscribers.
Until last month, when he had more than 1 million subscribers, he lost the 1 million YouTuber title amid the controversy over releasing 'KTX fall accident CCTV,' and his subscribers fell to 950,000 within a week, but there has been no significant subscriber drop since then.
Earlier, on Aug. 14 Park We was knocked down after catching his foot on a social service worker's foot while disembarking from a KTX, and a week later on the 21st he explained the situation and released the CCTV on his YouTube channel.
However, after the video was released, netizens pointed out that although the on-site workers had sufficiently apologized, it was excessive for Park We, who had more than 1 million subscribers, to release the CCTV video on his channel.
Park We accepted the criticism and posted an apology, saying, "I am sorry for disappointing many people with the video uploaded today. My way of conveying it was clumsy and my thinking was short." Even after Park We's apology, the backlash continued. Lectures he was scheduled to appear at were repeatedly canceled, and he voluntarily resigned as a Seoul city publicity ambassador.
Critical comments spread not only to Park We's SNS and YouTube but also to his wife Song Ji-eun and comedian Kim Ki-ri, who introduced the two, and the controversy continued. Eventually they limited the ability to comment on some SNS posts.
However, about three weeks after the video was posted, reactions have calmed. The rapidly falling subscriber count has not dropped below 950,000, and Park We and Song Ji-eun remain silent without notable SNS activity.
As the controversy subsides, interest is turning to whether Park We will resume activities, and attention is focused on when he will appear before the public again.
