Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage's coastal mansion near Malibu, U.S., experienced a large sinkhole near its shoreline, prompting nearby residents to evacuate urgently. The homeowner himself, Nicolas Cage, has not been seen anywhere, drawing attention.
On the 9th (local time), according to the Daily Mail, the driveway to the seaside mansion on Sea Level Drive in Malibu that Nicolas Cage purchased in 2024 for $10.5 million (Hanwha about 14 billion won) completely collapsed due to a large sinkhole.
Local fire authorities, responding to a gas line leak report, discovered this major disaster, and the Malibu city government issued an emergency order warning residents in the area of an "imminent danger."
The sinkhole is reported to be massive, about 9 meters (30 feet) wide, about 18 meters (60 feet) long and about 7.5–9 meters (25–25 feet) deep. As a result, much of the road was damaged, preventing large emergency vehicles such as fire trucks from passing, and gas supply was cut off and tap water faced the risk of being stopped for the safety of nearby residents. At least seven households have been deemed uninhabitable (red-tagged), and additional evacuation orders have followed due to road closures. The American Red Cross set up a shelter at a nearby Malibu high school.
Experts cite coastal erosion as the cause of the incident. They say coastal erosion worsened significantly due to stronger tides and heavy rains from Hurricane Marie combined with the "super El Niño" phenomenon.
Aerial reporting found that there was no one inside Nicolas Cage's mansion at the time of the accident. The house was reportedly undergoing remodeling work, and fortunately no casualties have been reported so far.
Meanwhile, who legally changed his name last year from his birth name Nicolas Kim Coppola to "Nick Cage," is the nephew of acclaimed director Francis Ford Coppola and comes from a prominent Hollywood family. His notable works include Leaving Las Vegas, The Rock, Face/Off and National TREASURE, and he won the Academy Award for best actor in 1996. In 2021 he attracted attention by holding his fifth wedding to Riko Shibata, a Japanese woman 31 years his junior.
