Hollywood actor and comedian Chris Rock (61) candidly expressed his feelings about returning to the Oscars following Will Smith's 'slap incident' at the 2022 Academy Awards (Oscars).
In a recent interview with Variety, Chris Rock promoted his new film Misty Green, which he directed, and shared his stance on the possibility of reappearing at the Oscars.
At the 94th Academy Awards in 2022, Chris Rock was on stage to present the award for best documentary feature when he made a joke mocking Jada Pinkett Smith's hair loss, after which Will Smith slapped him. Smith won the best actor award that night but was banned from attending the Oscars for 10 years as a result of the incident.
Having largely refrained from mentioning the incident for a long time afterward, Chris Rock expressed regret that the controversy has overshadowed much of his work. He recalled calmly, "I wish that hadn't happened," and said, "The unlucky day I went through is not the most important or grand thing in this world."
When asked about the possibility of returning as an Oscars host after previously hosting in 2005 and 2016, Rock was restrained and humble. He said, "There are many great hosts. Conan O'Brien is amazing, and Nikki Glaser was great at the Golden Globes. I can't say never, but I think my era is over."
He went on to state the single condition under which he would attend the Oscars again: "I won't go back unless I'm nominated," adding, "If I'm nominated I'll think about it then, but right now I'm tempering expectations."
Meanwhile, the film Misty Green, which Chris Rock recently directed, stars Anna Kendrick, Adam Driver, Topher Grace and Daniel Kaluuya, and tells the story of a talented actress fighting to make a comeback, drawing anticipation.
