'Korea's leading communication expert' Kim Chang-ok appears on 'Radio Star' to reveal shocking recent news of his transformation into a lacquer artist and the bittersweet behind-the-scenes story tied to maintaining 'two households' in Jeju.
The MBC program 'Radio Star,' airing at 10:30 p.m. on the 9th, is presented as a special titled 'Inspiration is rising~ Let's go! Artist,' featuring Kim Chang-ok, Jang Kiha, Swings and Jeon So-yeon.
Kim Chang-ok, who has surpassed 10,000 cumulative lectures and delivered warm consolation to the public, reveals a surprising recent life focused on lacquer work. He says he became captivated by lacquer pieces he encountered by chance and sought out a master to learn the craft, and that he continued working for four years despite the battling with lacquer poisoning. He says that through the simple, repetitive labor of lacquer work he emptied complicated thoughts and received such great consolation that he was able to stop taking psychiatric medication, drawing attention.
Kim Chang-ok introduces a unique working method in which he mixes stone powder and lacquer himself to create color and draws a line in a single breath with a roller. Having completed about 40 pieces and recently held his first solo exhibition, he explains in the studio the special meaning behind his representative work 'Crying' and shows his qualities as a true artist.
His daily life, maintaining 'two households' in Seoul and Jeju for about eight to nine years, is also recalled. Burned out from lectures, Kim created his own space in his hometown of Jeju. However, a shocking incident occurred when a centipede fell from the ceiling and landed on a child's face while his children were sleeping at the Jeju house, and the children declared, "I will never go again," unintentionally giving him solitary freedom — a bittersweet behind-the-scenes story that provokes laughter.
A contrast to his stage persona, his 'real-life husband' side is also revealed. He says his wife teases him, "You make people laugh well outside, so why don't you make us laugh at home?" and he confesses that he is shy in personal relationships.
He also recalls a past in which he graduated from a technical high school, completed service in the Marine Corps and later entered a music college. Wanting not to lose to his younger classmates, he says he attended school wearing his military uniform and boots, and while learning classical singing with great effort he received special teaching from a master. He says that teaching has become a message he recalls again now in the process of lacquer work.
