Singer Sung Si Kyung laughed after recalling his time active in Japan while listening to Taemin talk about performing at the world-renowned music festival Coachella.
On the 4th, KBS2TV 'The Seasons-Sung Si-kyung's Ear Candy' aired with Taemin appearing as a guest and sharing his impressions of recently performing at Coachella.
Taemin became the first male solo singer to take the Coachella stage. He said he was not particularly accustomed to festival culture. Even so, he said he discovered new enjoyment in the scene where countless artists and audience members came together in one space through music, saying it was a good and fun experience to feel that sense of togetherness.
He put considerable effort into preparing the stage. Taemin said he performed as many as 13 songs during about 40 to 50 minutes, explaining that he wanted to compress and show the musical history he has walked so far within the limited time. He said he arranged the set list and stage tightly so his long solo career could be seen at a glance.
What excited Taemin most was that the show was not only for fans who already liked him. He explained that because of the festival format, audience members often walk around and stop when they discover a stage they like. In that environment, he said he felt relieved to see his stage filled with an audience.
Meeting not only existing fans but also a new generation who did not know him well was also a fresh stimulus. Taemin described his feelings at the time as if he had stepped out of the familiar fence and felt "placed outside the world." Rather, that unfamiliar environment stimulated Taemin's competitive spirit. He said he approached the performance with the mindset of capturing the audience who came to the venue for his stage, saying "I thought I would make the people who came here mine."
Hearing this, Sung Si Kyung empathized with Taemin's feelings but then brought up his own overseas performance experience at a completely different scale, turning the set into a sea of laughter. Sung Si Kyung recalled that during his activities in Japan he often sang in shopping malls, remembering that he performed while "smelling fried chicken." He had expected that if he set up a stage, people would naturally stop and listen to his songs, but in reality many passed by without interest. Laughter erupted at Sung Si Kyung's self-deprecating comparison of Taemin on a world-class festival stage and his own experience singing in the middle of a Japanese shopping mall.
Still, Sung Si Kyung said he agreed that the experience of putting oneself in front of unfamiliar public audiences had the same meaning. He recalled that even then he felt as if he were directly introducing himself to people who did not know him, and he cheered for Taemin, who faced a new audience head-on at Coachella, saying "really cool."
