Singer Gree actively refuted allegations and malicious comments about being excluded from his Marine Corps cohort and other suspicions.
On April 4, a video titled "I addressed the suspicions so far myself" was posted on the YouTube channel Kim Gree.
After seeing comments and taking time to explain, Gree said, "I don't use social media. People around me kept sending me things asking, 'Was there a problem in the Marine Corps?' So I looked, and there were a lot of malicious comments on my Marine Corps videos," he said.
He added, "Even after serving in the military, only in Korea would people look at malicious comments. Of course I didn't join the Marines to get praise, but even after I came back there were a lot of comments making a fuss," he said, sounding baffled.
Comments included malicious remarks such as, 'Gree, you worked at the division headquarters but don't show Marine pride; I've never seen you go to training, what's that about,' 'Gree, you got excused from training for some reason. Stop bragging about the Marines,' and 'You got excluded from the cohort and rode the easy path, then you market the Marines like your heroic tale to belittle the unit.'
Gree explained, "Saying I was excluded from the cohort erases my being the 1308th. It removes my cohort. You can see it as being ostracized," he said. Before elaborating, he introduced those he had lined up, saying, "Rather than me explaining, I arranged Marines. I arranged my peers, juniors, seniors, and top seniors. If I had been unable to serve properly, would they have come forward?"
Peers and seniors explained, "It's not the division headquarters but the brigade headquarters. The unit was focused on duties rather than training." In response, Gree said, "How could you go out if there was no training?" and defended himself, "There were national defense training, snow removal training, and artillery fire training. I attended all the trainings that existed."
Regarding rumors that he did not train and just loafed, a peer said, "Whenever (Gree) hyung trained, he was always there, so we thought he didn't skip out," he said.
Especially about cohort exclusion, a senior from the 1306th said, "After seeing that Gree hyung came, we believed there was no cohort exclusion in our unit. The seniors also took good care of him," he said.
Then Gree said, "I was the only one known publicly. So it became a big issue. I also came in and out while making noise on broadcasts. If I had caused problems there, it would have hurt the Marine Corps' image, so I remember being treated very strictly. So why would I dislike my platoon leader? Because he treated me strictly," he said.
He added, "Honestly, when celebrities return from the military everyone praises them. These people curse," he said, expressing his grievance. A senior also said, "Serving in the Marines should improve your image," and could not understand the malicious comments surrounding Gree.
