A petition by families of a woman who fell to her death from an officetel in Busan, demanding KBS take a position because the perpetrator's sister appears in a KBS daily drama, has reached the threshold for a response. The ball is now in KBS's court.
A, who identified herself as a family member of the Busan officetel fall victim, posted 'I am a family member of the Busan officetel fall victim' on the KBS viewer petition board on the 3rd, and the post received 1,057 endorsements in one Haru, meeting KBS's response criteria.
KBS viewer petitions require 1,000 endorsements within 30 days from the posting date for KBS to respond within 30 days. The fact that the petition reached the endorsement threshold in just Haru shows how much attention the issue has drawn.
The Busan officetel fall occurred in January 2024 in an officetel in Jin Goo, Busan, when a woman in her 20s, identified as B, fell to her death during an argument with her ex-boyfriend B. Initially, B told police that the victim fell after she left the house, but the investigation revealed that he had repeatedly assaulted and stalked the victim.
B was brought to trial on charges including special intimidation, property damage, refusal to vacate and violation of the anti-stalking law. The first trial ordered 3 years and 6 months in prison and 40 hours of a stalking treatment program, but the appeals court reduced the sentence to 3 years and 2 months.
Afterward, the bereaved families posted a petition claiming that the perpetrator's sister is appearing in a KBS daily drama. The families said, "We lost our beloved daughter unjustly. Our daughter suffered from the perpetrator's severe stalking and was tormented until she met an unjust death," and noted, "Since that day my time has stopped, but the world feels so indifferent and cruel."
They added, "The perpetrator's sister is now appearing in a prominent role in a KBS evening daily drama, smiling and crying on TV and receiving much love as a drama actress, continuing her career as if nothing happened," and "Our family died unjustly, but the perpetrator's family's daughter is thriving as an actress. How can the world be so unfair?"
The bereaved families said, "On one side, parents who lost their beloved daughter are collapsing every day, while on the other side life goes on as if nothing happened, and that reality is unbearably painful," and asked KBS to clarify whether it was aware of this fact and to take responsible action as a public broadcaster.
The ball is now in KBS's court. Attention is focused on what responsible response KBS will provide within 30 days.
