Broadcaster Seo Dong-ju spoke about the psychological burden she experienced as the child of a famous entertainer.
On the 3rd, the channel Seo Dong-ju's Ddo.Do.Dong uploaded a video titled "Living as the child of a famous entertainer | Why challenges get easier as you age".
That day Seo Dong-ju attempted vocal recording for the first time. When asked why, unlike others, it became easier to take on challenges after becoming an adult, she opened up, "I'm a somewhat unusual case in that when I was younger I lived under other people's gaze, so I think that's why. At that time, Seo Dong-ju was 'so-and-so's daughter,' 'they say she's smart,' 'what is she doing,' 'if she studies abroad she'll do it like this.' From the moment I was born, my life was just laid out in front of me, and if there was a stage, I would be placed on that stage all alone. I wasn't ready yet, but suddenly I was getting the spotlight," she said.
She continued, "As you know, the stronger the light, the stronger the shadow. All those gazes were too burdensome and overwhelming for me, I suppose, when I was young. But after going through that period and studying abroad, I became a 'nobody (anonymous).' At that time, because no one knew me, no one could have expectations of me, and I learned many things then," she said, recalling the time she found herself through studying abroad.
Seo Dong-ju said, "When I was younger, from the moment I was born I was special without making an effort. My parents are very famous. These things made me 'that special child.' But I didn't accomplish anything. Because my parents were wealthy I lived well, because they paid for private lessons I did well in school — but when I studied abroad, although my parents paid the tuition, the efforts I made during the time when I didn't know the language at all were my own efforts, weren't they?"
She said, "After that, despite continuing hardships, even after my divorce I entered Law School, received scholarships and studied; many of those things were also my own efforts, weren't they? So rather, by becoming a 'nobody' I was able to create many forms of uniqueness through my own work within ordinariness. I feel that way. Usually it goes the other way, doesn't it? Usually you start as a nobody and become someone special, but I started as someone special, became a nobody, and it actually turned out well for me," she said.
Meanwhile, Seo Dong-ju is the daughter of actress Seo Jeong-hee and comedian the late Seo Se-won. She married a Korean-American businessman 6 years her senior in 2010 but divorced in 2014, and last year in June she remarried a non-celebrity 4 years her junior and is currently preparing for a second child.
