Hollywood actor Andrew Garfield reaffirmed his belief in the "LGBTQ (gay) Spider-Man" that he asserted 13 years ago.
Andrew Garfield recently restated his long-held view in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that Marvel's flagship hero Spider-Man could be attracted to men.
Andrew Garfield said "I still believe anyone can wear that suit," emphasizing, "The reason Spider-Man is loved worldwide is that skin color, gender and sexual orientation are not visible. Anyone can project themselves into that suit."
Earlier, Andrew Garfield drew attention when he revealed an anecdote that during filming of the 2013 film "The Amazing Spider-Man" series he had proposed to the production team that they explore Peter Parker's sexual identity. At the time he mentioned changing Peter Parker's love interest Mary Jane to a man, and expressed his view, "Shouldn't Peter be allowed to explore his sexual identity? Why couldn't Peter be gay or attracted to men?"
He recalled that his remarks 13 years ago were "a rebellious attempt and a passion," saying, "I only asked why not; I wanted an environment where everyone is respected and included."
Andrew Garfield, who rose to global stardom playing Peter Parker in the 2012 "The Amazing Spider-Man" and the 2014 sequel, made a surprise return as a Spider-Man in the multiverse alongside Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland in the 2021 film "Spider-Man: No Way Home," delivering explosive fun to global fans.
Meanwhile, Andrew Garfield is continuing promotional activities for his new historical drama film The Uprising, scheduled to open on Sept. 10.
