Singer Song Ji-eun's past remarks about her newlywed life with her husband Park Wi are receiving renewed attention, and criticism directed at Park Wi is producing an unexpected backlash that is spreading to people around him.
Recently, through online communities, a video of Song Ji-eun appearing on the YouTube channel "CTS Christian TV" last July and talking about her married life with her husband Park Wi was rediscovered.
At the time Song Ji-eun said that "Since I was young I had a 'good child' complex, so when I dated I wanted to be loved by oppa (Park Wi) and adjusted to everything," and candidly shared, "But after we got married, always adjusting to others became exhausting and it showed on my face."
Song Ji-eun said, "Oppa thought, 'There is no one who matches me as well as Ji-eun,' so he decided to marry. Food preferences, the way of looking at people, interpretation of situations, hobbies, and so on. But most things turned out not to match," she said.
She said, for example, that she did not particularly like Park Wi's favorite dish gambas, and "Oppa was very surprised. But that was a short period, and he looked at me with sad eyes and asked, 'Have you lived like that until now? Have you always lived to satisfy others?' Then he told me, 'When you are in front of me, please tell me honestly.' He listened to Ji-eun's feelings and applied them, saying, 'Let's live a life that satisfies you too,' so I really tell oppa everything honestly," saying that they were compromising toward the directions they each wanted in their married life. In fact, earlier Park Wi had said, "Ji-eun was a yes girl when dating, but it turns out half of the things were things she didn't like."
The remarks captured the communication process of understanding each other in the early days of their marriage, but they appear to be drawing renewed attention as they intersect with Park Wi's recent KTX controversy.
Earlier, Park Wi released a video showing the scene of an accident with a staff member who was helping him while disembarking from the KTX, and even after he apologized for the mistake that occurred during the assistance, he was criticized for posting a video that could expose the person's identity. In response, Park Wi set the video to private, acknowledged his immaturity and apologized.
However, the controversy did not stop there and is spreading to people unrelated to the incident, raising concerns. Some netizens visited the social media account of comedian Kim Ki-ri, who connected the two, and left critical comments, not only targeting Song Ji-eun. Also, the recent suspension of actress Park Jin Hee's social media activity, who has had a close relationship with Park Wi, was dragged into baseless speculation.
Beyond Park Wi's acknowledgment of his immaturity and apology, the escalation into conjecture, distortion and criticism directed at his social circle is a pattern that needs to be guarded against.
