Hollywood actor Shailene Woodley confessed that she was told only a year after filming that her Mary Jane Watson character had been completely cut from the past film "The Amazing Spider-Man 2."
According to Page Six's Aug. 31 report (local time), Woodley, who recently attended an interview with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, recalled the time during the 2014 release of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," saying, "When I was cast as Mary Jane Watson, the character I loved most as a child, I really felt like I had the world," recalling a moment that felt like a dream.
At the time, Woodley, who filmed about three scenes with Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, naturally expected to appear in the film. But one baffling phone call from the studio turned the situation around.
Woodley said, "About a year after filming, the production team told me, 'you won't be in our movie anymore.' I was so surprised that I asked, 'Excuse me? What do you mean?'" conveying the shock of the moment. She added, "The production team explained that there were too many new characters in this installment and they needed to show how Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield's relationship wrapped up first."
Originally, Mary Jane Watson was supposed to appear in earnest after the death of Gwen Stacy played by Emma Stone, but the scenes were all deleted, and with the third film ultimately canceled, Woodley's joining of the "Spider-Man" franchise sadly became merchandise.
Woodley joked, "That was the explanation they gave me, but no one knows the truth. Maybe they just edited me out because I wasn't good enough," drawing laughter.
Meanwhile, the "The Amazing Spider-Man" series led by Andrew Garfield ended with two films, but Garfield later made a surprise appearance as a multiverse Spider-Man alongside Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland in the 2021 film "Spider-Man: No Way Home," delivering an emotional moment to fans worldwide. Currently, Zendaya plays the role of MJ in the "Spider-Man" series, making a singular impression.
