From Yoo Hai Jin, the lead of the 10-million-hit The King's Warden, to Yim Siwan, they have come together for the new film "Modup."
The film Modup has completed a fresh casting lineup of Yoo Hai Jin, Yim Siwan, Kim So Hyun and Lee Mu-saeng and will begin full-scale filming on Sept. 4 (Fri).
Modup (director Park Jong-hyun, distribution provided by SHOWBOX, produced by Po Entertainment Co., co-produced by SHOWBOX) is an occult mystery film that tells the story of people entangled like an unending "modup" (knot) on a remote island long abandoned since the 1960s.
First, Yoo Hai Jin, the actor who led the box office success of The King's Warden, which ranked second all-time at the box office, returns with his second occult film after Exhuma. In the film Yoo Hai Jin plays the village head of a fishing village, "I-do." "I-do" is the character who protects the fishing village and keeps watch over the remote island, and he will lead the story from the center of events that connect past and present. Having built a unique filmography by fully embodying his characters in every work, Yoo Hai Jin is expected to create cross-generational acting synergy as he plays the father in relation to Yim Siwan this time. Ahead of the first shoot, Yoo Hai Jin said, "We will start filming together in the cool September. I hope we can finish filming safely, and I will do my best to make a good film."
Yim Siwan, who has repeatedly delivered striking transformations in works such as the Squid Game Season series and the film The Attorney, plays I-do's son, "Sang-gun." He is a character who charges forward once he sets his mind to something, and at Sun-ok's request he heads to the remote island despite his father's opposition. Having proven a wide range from comedy to action and drama, attention is on the new facets Yim Siwan will show in this genre. In particular, after drawing attention for his flavorful Chungcheong dialect performance in Boyhood, he will challenge the Jeolla dialect this time to bring the character to life.
Kim So Hyun, who has honed her acting palette across eras and genres in works such as the drama Good Boy, River Where the Moon Rises and the film The Last Princess, will take on the occult genre for the first time with Modup. Returning to the screen after about 10 years, she plays Sun-ok, who heads to the remote island to treat an unexplained illness and draws I-do and Sang-gun into unpredictable events. Reuniting with Yim Siwan for the first time since The Moon Embracing the Sun, Kim So Hyun is expected to complete a new chemistry with deeper acting depth.
Lee Mu-saeng joins as Sun-ok's father, Gutaek, completing a solid acting ensemble. Gutaek is the character who, driven by strange symptoms afflicting his daughter, holds on to a final hope and sets out to find the remote island, standing at the beginning of all the events. Lee Mu-saeng, who left a deep impression with three-dimensional performances that traversed good and evil in the films Citizen Deok-hee, Noryang: Deadly Sea and the series The Glory and The World of the Married, will portray a father's desperate feelings to save his daughter with intensity in this work.
Modup, noted for its fresh casting combinations, is directed by Park Jong-hyun, who gained solid on-set experience as part of the directing staff on films such as A Normal Family and Broker. He said, "I am thrilled and excited to make my first film with excellent actors and a reliable staff. Above all, I hope everyone can complete filming safely and without incident. I ask for your support," expressing his expectations for his first feature directorial effort. Adding strength to the production is director Kang Yoon-seong, who has demonstrated exceptional genre sense through works such as The Outlaws, the Big Bet series and Low Life.
Meanwhile, the film's investor-distributor SHOWBOX drew industry attention by consecutively producing hits from the romance Once We Were Us to the 10-million-hit The King's Warden, the zombie film Colony and the horror Salmokji: Whispering Water. Interest is rising over whether the new film Modup will also succeed.
