Comedian Kim Gi-yeol revealed the story of how he had to leave Gag Concert because of his fiery temper.
On the 31st, KBS2 Malja Show aired a special on "people who get angry easily."
In that broadcast, a correspondent's story was revealed about being troubled by a personality that cannot tolerate injustice. He said he has lost friends because of his personality and sought advice on how to fix it. Hearing this, Kim Young Hee sympathized, saying, "I really relate — in my case I often spoke up and fought on behalf of others a lot. I thought that really protected the friend, but even when I took their side, there were many cases where it still caused a rift, with people saying, 'Why are you making a big deal out of this? I was only venting to you. You could have just listened.'"
He advised, "As a result, all the arrows end up being aimed at me. Later they sometimes reconcile among themselves and get along fine. Often I become the odd one out. We call that meddling. I praise the intention of wanting to step in and take responsibility for problems the parties themselves cannot resolve before you suffer greater wounds and lose more people. Still, unless the parties want it or it's appropriate, don't do it. Even just listening can be a sufficient comfort."
She added, "When it comes to righteous words and speaking up, Kim Gi-yeol is never missing from that — he really cannot keep justly righteous words inside his heart," drawing attention. Jung Beom Kyun agreed, saying, "He never tolerates injustice," and Kim Gi-yeol brought up an unhappy anecdote, saying, "But I have suffered a lot because of that. Once on Gag Concert we were doing a sketch with rookie juniors, and they were edited out."
Jung Beom Kyun asked, "Who were the rookies?" and a hesitant Kim Gi-yeol candidly replied, "At that time there were Im Woo-il and Kwak Beom, among others." He said, "When they were rookies they did a sketch with me, but those friends were edited out. Isn't it the PD's authority to edit that? I accepted that, but those friends said, 'This is unfair. You said you wouldn't edit; the audience reaction was good, so weren't we edited because we're rookies and have no clout? Senior, please say something.' They approached me in a roundabout way. I shouldn't have done that, but I thought, 'This seems wrong,' so I went to the Gag Concert PD. Now they would never do that. I went and asked, 'Why did you do that?' After talking back and forth like that, I was the only one who stopped doing Gag Concert," he revealed, surprising listeners.
Jung Beom Kyun asked, "So you fell out with the PD because you spoke up for the juniors and then stopped doing Gag Concert?" and Kim Gi-yeol expressed his grievance, saying, "Yes. I thought those two friends would leave with me, but they did well. Didn't those friends become very successful? So you see what I mean?"
Jung Beom Kyun asked, "Have they looked after you since then?" and Kim Young Hee said, "Do the juniors feel grateful? They should be grateful." But Kim Gi-yeol said, "They forgot. When I mention it they say, 'Oh right!' Of course I get along very well with those friends now, so there's no need to bring it up, but if you nitpick, I was the only one who suffered the loss. Still, there's nowhere for me to complain about it. Since we have this kind of setting, I'm talking about it now," he said jokingly.
He said, "I never once defied or argued with the PD after that. The Malja Show PD is younger than me, but I treat him like an elder brother," which drew laughter. Jung Beom Kyun said, "Actually it's not that they forgot — life happens and people forget, and Kwak Beom and Im Woo-il probably feel grateful in their own way. Aren't they still getting along well with Gi-yeol?" and Kim Gi-yeol said, "I'll try contacting them," while also saying, "We get along well," dispelling misunderstandings and drawing laughter.
