Kim Jin-gon appeared on KBS 1TV's TV Show Genuine and Beautiful, which aired on the 30th, and served as a show appraiser alongside Kim Ga Eun and Shin Yoon-seung. He carefully examined a variety of submitted items and suggested estimated appraised values, while adding his trademark wit to bring energy to the broadcast.
That day Kim Jin-gon, from his entrance, said, "Oh my, hello. I'm Grandma Kim Jin-soon. The things I used since childhood are genuine and beautiful. If you have any difficulties, ask me," fully immersing himself in the character from Gag Concert and eliciting laughter.
When the first submitted item, a posthumous portrait of scholar and civil service official Lee Chang-su, appeared, Kim Jin-gon showed great interest, saying, "I've never seen something like this before." He marvelled, "The color and everything, it looks like it was made by AI and then carefully pressed, so it's very well preserved," and after examining the portrait up close he jokingly pointed out small details, saying, "It seems he had a neat haircut when the portrait was painted," bringing laughter.
The portrait was identified as a work painted in 1762 by Byeon Sang-byeok, a court painter at the Dohwaseo in the late Joseon period. Kim Jin-gon expressed surprise at the delicate expression, saying, "It doesn't look like a painting; it looks like an actual photograph." While hearing the family story behind the submitted item, he showed skillful hosting by naturally asking the client questions.
It was especially meaningful that the ancestor's portrait had been carefully preserved and handed down for about 250 years, and Kim Jin-gon suggested an estimated appraised value of 150 million won. The expert's estimated appraised value was 300 million won, and Kim Jin-gon was the closest among the show appraisers, winning one janggu. It was a moment that demonstrated his exceptional appraisal sense and presence.
The second submitted item was a high-quality antique cabinet that exuded a dignified charm. Kim Jin-gon carefully examined the item and listened to the expert's explanation of the cabinet's uses and characteristics, immersing himself in the appraisal.
When the final submitted item, a white porcelain carved vase, appeared, Kim Jin-gon again showed interest, saying, "It perfectly shows what 'Genuine and Beautiful' is." Through the expert's explanation, he closely observed how shapes and features of white porcelain changed over periods, and he studied the item seriously even during the 60-second estimated appraisal time.
Notably, Kim Jin-gon discovered the inscription "Hyeon-ju" on the pottery and showcased his keen observation by asking whether many pieces of pottery with that inscription still exist. Considering the value of an item that has passed through many years, he actively participated in the appraisal by suggesting an estimated appraised value of 5 million won.
